How we can help you

Mid Career Checkpoint - hospitalityThe Mid-Career Checkpoint Program is an Australian Government initiative delivered by the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) that provides a free skills and employment assessment to help you identify your training, employment and career objectives.

The program equips you with a customised Skills, Training and Employment Plan (STEP) that details your goals and identifies your personal and professional attributes and your skills and qualifications, as well as any skills gaps. You will also be provided with information on local employment and training opportunities that you can apply for.

The program offers a training incentive of up to $3,000 to help you undertake recommended accredited training – and, if you need a little more support to step back into paid work or step up your career, you can also access free career coaching.

Who can join the program?
  1. Coaching and support is available to Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents who have undertaken caring responsibilities for more than six months (e.g. a career break with young children or looking after a family member).

    All carers must meet the following criteria:
    • Are currently out of the workforce and are looking to relaunch or kick-start their careers (stepping back in); or
    • Have recently rejoined the workforce and are looking to advance or change their careers (stepping up).
  2. The program is also available to Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents who are existing workers in a COVID-19 affected designated industry. General entry participants must be currently working in one of the following sectors:
    • Retail Trade
    • Administrative and Support Services
    • Child Care Services
    • Education and Training
    • Arts and Recreation
    • Residential Care Services
    • Accommodation and Food Services.

Mid-Career Checkpoint coaching sessions

As part of the program, coaching sessions have been carefully crafted by our Career Guides to assist you with building confidence and work readiness skills.

Our tailored coaching sessions cover topics such as:

  1. Resumes and cover letters - how to make your resume and cover letter stand out from the crowd
  2. Interview skills - common interview questions and how to answer them effectively
  3. Confidence building - how to build confidence when returning to work
  4. Networking - how to utilise your business and professional network when returning to work
  5. Job searching - where and how to search for the right jobs
  6. Communication skills - learn how to communicate effectively in the workplace
  7. Workplace culture and expectations - learn more about workplace culture and expectations in Australia and how this can differ to working in other countries
  8. Digital literacy - get up-to-date with changing technological trends.

FAQs

I have been out of paid work due to caring for a family member. Am I eligible?

To be eligible, you need to have taken time out of the paid workforce to be the primary caregiver to your own family OR to family members and friends who have high care needs including disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail or aged.

Carers who have recently returned to the paid workforce (within the past 18 months) are also eligible.

Participants do not have to be in receipt of income support payments from Services Australia.

 

How long does it take to participate in the Mid-Career Checkpoint?

On average, taking part in the program takes approximately 6 hours over several sessions, at times that suit you.

Appointments and coaching sessions with your MCC provider can be conducted in person or online.

 

What kind of training can the Training Incentive be used for?

The Training Incentive provides capped funding of up to $3,000 (GST Exclusive) to support a Participant’s enrolment in specific accredited training, where this training is recommended in the Participant’s Skills, Training and Employment Plan.

For the training to be eligible for support through the Training Incentive, it must be:

  1. nationally accredited and Vocational Education Training
  2. necessary to address the Participant’s identified skills gaps or employment goals, and
  3. recommended in the Participant’s STEP.
